Contingency Management

Contingency management (CM) is an evidence-based intervention that reinforces positive behavior change by offering motivational incentives for measurable outcomes, such as negative drug screens, therapy attendance, or completion of CBT lessons. It’s among the most effective tools available for substance use disorder treatment, particularly for stimulant use disorder, where no FDA-approved medications exist. SAMHSA recommends CM for stimulant use disorder. For treatment providers, health plans, and public sector organizations, automating CM through a digital platform makes it possible to deliver this evidence-based intervention at scale, tracking goals, distributing incentives, and delivering an audit trail without adding administrative burden.
