SBIRT

SBIRT (Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment) is an evidence-based approach for identifying and addressing substance use before it escalates into a more severe disorder. Screening quickly assesses the severity of substance use and identifies the appropriate level of care. Brief intervention builds insight and motivation toward behavioral change, while referral to treatment connects individuals who need more extensive care with specialty services. For public sector organizations, SBIRT offers a standardized, reimbursable framework for early identification that fits within existing public health infrastructure and reporting requirements. It also gives health plans and providers a scalable, low-barrier way to catch risky substance use early and reduce reliance on higher-cost interventions down the line.
